5 Expert Tips for a Smooth Daycare Transition

Starting childcare is a major milestone in your child’s life—and in yours! It’s completely normal for everyone to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. At Village Values, we partner with families to make this process a success. Here are five trusted tips, adapted from guidance by leading early childhood organizations, to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
1. Talk About it Positively and Often
Familiarity builds comfort. In the days leading up to the start, talk about "school" in an exciting way. You can read books about starting school or say things like, "Soon you'll get to play with new friends and fun toys at Village Values!" Your positive energy is contagious and helps frame the experience as an adventure.
2. Establish a Goodbye Routine
A short, sweet, and predictable goodbye routine creates security. It could be two hugs, a high-five, and a wave from the window. The key is to be loving, but brief and consistent. This helps your child understand the routine of separation and reunion.
"As tempting as it may be, never sneak out while your child is distracted. This can create anxiety and mistrust. A confident, loving goodbye helps them understand that you will always come back."
3. Bring a Comfort from Home
A small piece of home can provide immense security. Pack a familiar object like a special blanket ("lovie"), a favorite stuffed animal, or a laminated photo of your family. This "transitional object" gives them a tangible link to you throughout the day when they need a little extra reassurance.
4. Create a Partnership with Your Caregivers
We are your partners in this! Communication is everything. Share your child’s schedule, what soothes them, their special words for things, and any concerns you have. The more we know, the better we can support your child's individual needs. Trust that we are experts in this process and are here to help both you and your little one feel secure.
5. Be Confident at Drop-Off
Children are incredibly perceptive and feed off your emotions. It's okay to feel sad, but try your best to project a calm and confident attitude. If you seem anxious, your child may feel there is something to worry about. Give your hugs, say your loving goodbye as you practiced, and then depart confidently. A happy, confident departure from you gives them the green light to have a happy, confident day.
